What crappy timing. Waylan popped up at her apartment twenty minutes before her date with Michael.
“Goodness, he better have my money,” she grumbled before swinging open the door.
Waylan’s eyes opened wide. “Whoa…wow…” he stammered. “You look really nice.”
Waylan’s mouth remained ajar, as if he expected her to feed him. His gawking wasn’t considered a compliment, in fact she found him annoying. He’d seen her dressed for an evening out many times and behaved like she altered her appearance. She suspected he had grown accustomed to her dressed down. The ‘wow’ visuals aren’t realistic day to day. A man should be wowed by what’s inside a woman. Perhaps, this is why men are easily duped. Let him gawk like an idiot, he wouldn’t have a second chance at hurting her again, he already proved he couldn’t be trusted.
“Do you have my money?” she asked jolting him from his lascivious stare at her buxom.
He handed her an envelope. “That’s the remainder of the money I borrowed from you.”
“Borrowed?” She placed the envelope in her purse. To heck with a bank, she’d keep her cash accessible without the middle-man from now on. She was a quick learner; humiliation can make a person smart.
“Well, yeah. I planned to give it back.”
“Sure you did.”
He was about to take a step forward when she exclaimed, “Okay Waylan, you’ve returned the money you stole now good-bye.”
He stood there. “What about the number?”
She’d forgotten all about that. “I lost it, oops!”
He looked extremely disappointed, pitiful creature.
“Tyler…can we please talk?”
She wondered what else was there to say, they were over, she had her money and now he could mosey on along. Why have remorse now?
“Waylan, what you did was foul.” She had a notion to listen to his plea for forgiveness because she was certain that’s where all the theatrical expressions led.
“Tyler…listen I’m really sorry…”
Of course, she was right. Tyler cut him off right there; she decided she didn’t want to listen. She had a date. “Sorry people will always be sorry. Now leave and save that apology for your mother who produced a no-good son!” She pushed the door in. Waylan jumped out of the way to avoid getting hit in the face.
She slammed the door shut and exhaled –hard. Agitation is an understatement; she was peeved that she considered listening to his apology. Waylan would say anything. But, how can anyone believe a liar?
Tyler glanced at her watch. “Oh crap!” Michael would arrive any minute. Before Waylan came she was trying to decide on the perfect shoes.
She cleared her mind of Waylan. She had the money for rent. The anxiety eased. She had a good two months to find steady employment. Now that she could cover basic living expenses the thought of having dinner with Michael, an adult with a steady job was far more appealing than exchanging conversation with a man-child.
Michael rang her cell. Just as she thought, he was the punctual sort. She told him she was coming down, grabbed her clutch, smiling from ear to ear.
